people of iran

February 11, 2012
Announcement n. 1.

Letter from Rajai Shahr Prison, Karaj, to Pink Floyd.
Write a song for the freedom-loving people of Iran!
In hopes of a day when “with glasses high we raise a cry, for freedom has arrived”.
Worldwide Campaign to Free Political Prisoners.

This letter was written following the request of political prisoners of diverse political tendencies, who contacted Mina Ahadi directly, to raise international awareness regarding the situation of political prisoners and to promote the release of all of them, irrespective of their ideological stances and aims. There are hundreds of known political prisoners in Iran. We currently know the names of six hundred of them. They include labour leaders, dissident students, bloggers, lawyers, political activists and young people arrested and imprisoned following the demonstrations of 2009-10, in which millions of protesters participated. Some of these prisoners are threatened with implementation of their death sentences. Today, these detainees expect us all to unite in a concentrated, international effort to ensure their release. The prisoners believe that it is better if all institutions and organisations against the death penalty and in favour of releasing political prisoners join together to raise international awareness of Iranian political prisoners’ dire situation and to initiate a concerted effort to obtain freedom for all of them.

This campaign has officially begun with a letter to Pink Floyd from within the prison:

Dear Roger!

Throughout history, there have always been those wishing to build walls against free, proud people who wanted only liberty, justice and peace. The bricks in this wall are selfishness, tyranny and exploitation. I want to write to you about pain and terror, about a prison encompassing the length and breadth of Iran which has its people shackled by fascism and tyranny. A people who are denied the right to live and the right to vote, who are denied individual and social liberties, who are denied the right to the pursuit of happiness. As I write this letter to you, I am surrounded by high, cold walls.

Dear Roger!

More than ever before, the Iranian movement for freedom and democracy needs the support of free and creative people and principled artists like yourself. I am requesting you, as a renowned and influential artist on the world stage, to compose a song about the men and women of Iran who have risen in the cause of liberty, not only to hearten them but also to awaken people’s conscience through awareness of the difficult and harsh conditions which these individuals endure. This text of mine is inspired by your album “The Wall”, whose lyrics and tunes were a part of my youth. The music was always my friend. I always admired you and had great respect for you and for Pink Floyd. We hope for a day when the walls will come tumbling down and the chains of ignorance and tyranny will be torn asunder. We hope for a day when “with glasses high we raise a cry, for freedom has arrived”.
With best wishes to you,
From Rajai Shahr Prison, Karaj.

This was the first announcement by the Campaign to Free Political Prisoners from Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj. The audio version of this message, in English and Persian, has been delivered to Pink Floyd.

This is one of the messages which the prisoners incarcerated in the Islamic Republic’s dungeons have transmitted to the world through the Campaign.

We announce the formation of a worldwide campaign for the release of political prisoners and against execution. We shall try to convey to the ears of the world the messages of political prisoners and individuals condemned to death, to initiate a period of protest and resistance against torture, judicial murder, and the humiliation of political prisoners, and to make the prisoners aware of these activities and messages of international solidarity.

The attention currently focused on Iran, economic sanctions, and the threat of war loom over the people. It must be made clear to the world that the way to protest the crimes and savagery of the Islamic regime is to institute a political boycott of that regime, to close its embassies, and to defend the Iranian people’s legitimate struggle for the release of political prisoners and for the overthrow of this brutal system.

We call upon all people, and particularly all organisations which fight for the freedom of political prisoners and struggle against the death penalty, to form a united and compact independent front to defend the freedom of political prisoners, to strive against executions, and to convey the voices and protests of political prisoners to the ears of the world.

The International Campaign to Free Political Prisoners.
